An interdisciplinary visual and poetic installation

An interdisciplinary creative collaboration that explores the material and philosophical phenomena of the door through the mediums of visual art by Connecticut artist Mark Gerard McKee and compositions by Irish poet Celia de Fréine. Threshold also marked the launch of and forthcoming book publication project by MS17 Art Project.

Only Ghosts

ACCESS AND AMBIGUITY explores the idea of the door, through a large-scale immersive public art installation. Begun in Dublin Ireland in 2000, it is the culmination of 15 year process. Its spinoff project, THRESHOLD, is a multidisciplinary collaboration that incorporates both visual and literary experience through the work of American visual artist Mark Gerard McKee and Irish author, poet and playwright Celia de Freine. The project includes the publishing of Threshold a limited edition folio of the images and poetry as well as an accompanying book, by the collaborating artists. The project is a join production of MS17 Art Project and the Visual Art Library, both of New London Connecticut, organizations with the shared vision of bringing the Arts, Culture and Scholarship to the public though their temporary public art initiatives.

 

ABOVE:  Only Ghosts, the first door of the Access and Ambiguity series is the expression of that search for and ultimate separation from the roots of the remote past. The ghosts of those who came before me, my father, and his father, who I know only through scant anecdotes, haunt me and my efforts to trace the path of heritage. One can only speculate about those ancestors who remain forever inscrutable, access barred by a door of social, chronological and physical distances.
