Brenda van der Beek is originally a native of Amsterdam, but lives in North Andover Massachusetts. Her work reflects a sense of uncertainly, an unwillingness to consider to an end game, a sense of finality, the task done and complete in full. From a purely visual sense, these are rich paintings – treasure of enigmatic visual elements that hint at, yet do not quite define oddly familiar things and places. The artist for her part seems to have this intense need to make sense of some inner inventory of forms – constantly ordering and cataloging a visual lexicon. These are paintings that invite reading, like some ancient text left by one’s ancient progenitors – save that the Rosetta Stone, the primer by which that oddly familiar text might be deciphered, has yet to be found. That primordial tome is no less fascinating for remaining untranslatable.
